About Us

Our Story

Welcome to Biggar Flavour- our family run business based in the Scottish town of Biggar, producing baked goods, preserves and gifts.

Our Biggar Flavour story began when we took over The Orchard in summer 2007, as we decided when the traditional greengrocers became available that it was time for a change from Ranald’s career in agriculture. Since the beginning our ethos has always been to provide our customers with a wide range of high quality produce and excellent customer service.

As our business in The Orchard evolved to more of a delicatessen, we discovered lots of wonderful fine foods, many from small independent producers whose goods can be found in our beautifully crafted food gifts which we are well known for providing. We also created our own range of preserves in our early years of owning The Orchard, and Biggar Flavour was born!

Biggar Flavour expanded when we opened our bakery of the same name in the town’s existing bakery premises, neighbouring The Orchard in 2011 and at that time Jane stepped away from her career in pharmacy to fully focus on our business. This allowed us to make space for our ever-increasing product range, and also to increase the variety of products we made ourselves. Over the following eight years we earned our reputation for quality produce winning multiple awards, as we made popular classic bakes and experimented with different recipes. We are passionate about food so always love getting creative in the kitchen, with everything we produce being made from scratch using high quality ingredients, and with us always endeavouring to cater for a range of dietary requirements.

We closed the bakery front shop in July 2019, but have continued to bake behind the scenes in the kitchen, producing a range of traybakes, cakes and biscuits. These have been available to buy in The Orchard. We have also added a range of packed biscuits- oatcakes, crackers and sweet biscuits for retail and inclusion in our hampers. We cut all of our biscuits square to stand out from the rest! We were delighted to be awarded four Great Taste Awards for them in 2020, with a further five awards in 2021. We recently gained further acclaim for our biscuit range winning Best Savoury Biscuit in the Great British Food Awards!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we worked relentlessly keeping The Orchard open as an essential retail food shop, completely changing the way we worked to ensure our local community was kept fed, and supporting charities along the way.

Our latest innovation from early 2021 was our “Sunshine Boxes”, a sweet idea triggered by lockdowns, which allow our baked goods to be sent around the UK- a nice way of connecting with loved ones that we have been separated from. From two initial Box of Sunshine options- our Letterbox of Sunshine and Biggar Box of Sunshine- we now have nine different box types, even Savoury Boxes of Sunshine are available for those without a sweet tooth!

The latest evolution of Biggar Flavour will see us moving on from the retail business in The Orchard, with our focus moving to ongoing production of our baking and preserves; and creation of our range of beautiful food gifts. It’s time to rebrand for moving forward with this side of the business and the obvious choice is to go with our trademarked Biggar Flavour!

We have also now set up an online shop so that our products can spread far and wide. We will also be able to wholesale our goods to other independent retailers.

Our Town

Biggar is a small Lanarkshire town, which you can reach within one hour from Edinburgh or Glasgow. The town boasts a wide range of award winning, independently owned businesses including: grocers, restaurants and boutique shops. Biggar also has a rich history which can be explored in the town’s museums; and you should be sure to visit the Cadger’s Brig from which, it is told that, William Wallace spied upon the English Army.

Nestled within the southern uplands, Biggar comes into view while climbing Tinto, Culter Fell or the Broughton Heights; and is a convenient stop for some refreshment during a day of rambling.

Biggar is also perfect for a Family day out: home to “Pips and Panda” – which regularly put on a show at the Puppet theatre. There are also two parks – the Burn Braes and Public Park – which are ideal for picnics; and provide lots of fun whether you have children or are just a big kid yourself.

The town is also host to a number of annual events including Vintage Car Rallies, the Biggar Agricultural Show and the Biggar Gala Day. In October each year, The Biggar Little Festival showcases both local and national talents; offering a wide range of events featuring music, drama, comedy, literature, arts and crafts.

Biggar is also one of the best places in Scotland to “bring in the bells” on Hogmanay, with the annual bonfire taking place in the town centre. The enormous pile of wood can be seen accumulating from the beginning of December.

Whether visiting for the day or a short break, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your time – let us at The Orchard & Biggar Flavour fill your bellies!
